Louis Belzile - Untitled / Oil/Canvas, 30×36 in // 76.20×91.44 cm
Louis Belzile, Untitled, 30x36 in / 76.20x91.44 cm is an abstract representation that highlights bold forms and colors. Painted in oil on canvas, it reflects the artist's pursuit of pure expression through material and color. A work that invites the viewer's personal interpretation.
Louis Belzile, along with Fernand Toupin, Jauran (Rodolphe de Repentigny), and Jean-Paul Jérôme, was part of the initial Plasticiens movement which, in 1955, at a notable exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, launched the Plasticiens Manifesto.
Quebec and Canadian painting was then, and had been since the early 1940s, experiencing a great creative effervescence, where abstraction claimed to be the language of pictorial renewal. There were many debates between proponents of figuration and those of abstraction, and even among sympathizers of one and the other of the two schools of thought.
It is in this electrifying context that Louis Belzile asserted himself as a painter of modernity. His painting retained from his plasticiens past all the rigor of composition. Over the years, his language was enriched by a gestural suppleness that built light through a dreamlike quality evocative of his inner world.
