Marcel Favreau, a Canadian figurative painter
Figurative painter Marcel Favreau was born in Montreal on August 24, 1921. At the age of sixteen, he began his studies at the Monument National. The following year, he was admitted to the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1938 to 1940. His choice of colors made him a master in the art of painting trees, which he particularly loved. "I often work in prima; sometimes I start working immediately on a white background with color. I believe that painting is precisely drawing with a brush, and, consequently, my sketch will often be a monochrome. I like working this way. It allows me to establish my values, to place the masses of shadow and light, and then add color, layer by layer. Most of the time, I paint on a white background. Rarely on a prepared background. But sometimes I want to change the grain of the canvas." I often finish with a glaze to give more depth to the shadows and reveal more of the light.”
A landscape painting
"A landscape artist at heart, Marcel Favreau is a painter faithful to tradition, both in terms of brushstroke, technique and the representation of the subject within the rectangle. He actually paints most of his works on the motif, which explains the very special contact each of his paintings offers." Robert Bernier
A Quebec painter, Marcel Favreau's figurative works can be found in numerous private collections.
