Jesús Carles de Vilallonga, a great surrealist artist

Painter, muralist, sculptor and graphic artist of imaginary subjects, Jesús Carles de Vilallonga was born in Catalonia, Spain in 1927 (died in 2018). In 1971, the University of Montreal commissioned Vilallonga to paint a mural at the entrance to the Faculty of Law. Since then, he has painted murals and frescoes throughout Canada and Spain. An international painter, his oils, watercolors, inks, mixed media and drawings reveal a fabulous, imaginative and visionary dimension that baffles and surprises us. The works of art of Jesús Carles de Vilallonga will be the subject of several exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe.

A painting with imaginary subjects

"Catalan by origin, Jesus Vilallonga nonetheless left his mark on Canadian painting. He settled in Canada in 1955 and, from 1958, regularly presented exhibitions at the Dominion Gallery, one of the most important galleries in the country, until its closure in 2000. Upon his arrival in Montreal, abstraction dominated. Nevertheless, he remained faithful to figuration. A figuration that he approached in a very personal way and particularly inspired by surrealism. Painted with great finesse, each of his paintings immerses us in a world where the character is presented in an applied symbolism that is both sensual and mechanical… His contribution to our painting is considerable." Robert Bernier

The works of Jesús Carles de Vilallonga can be found in several major museum collections, both private and public, such as: Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, National Library of Paris, Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporáno in Madrid, Deutsches Fleichermuseum in Stuttgart, Art Gallery of London in Ontario, Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY, Art Gallery in Vancouver, Museo Omar Rayo in Colombia, etc.
